Hum

  1. I was pretty sure the humming was going to turn out to be my Jack. He hums all the time. I have all kinds of auditory sensory issues, but his humming is one of my happiest sounds. I'm pretty sure it bores a hole into the head of his little brother though, which might eventually cause a problem.

  2. Stimey, I don't mind people humming. Sometimes whistling gets to me. Not to the point where I go around blowing people up, though. I advise against that. Maybe just smack 'em around a little.

  3. LOL! I remember when TVs still had tubes instead of "solid state". When one tube started going bad it had a high pitch whine that drove me NUTS! No one else in the family could hear it and they'd make fun of me — until the tube blew. >;)

  5. lol!! I love this one! If I hear some sort of humming sound that I can't block out or get away from, I end up just suddenly jumping around to find out what it is. I'll start off by blankly staring and maybe scanning around. People around me will look at me and go "what's wrong?" and then when I tell them I swear I hear something, they'll go "oh, ok"... genuinely, I'm fortunate enough to report. As long as they don't think it's like some sudden depression or I just got bad news or something, they'll just think "oh, that's just how she is". It's cool that my friends are so cool!

  6. Chris, as long as you don't go around zapping appliances with a ray gun - I think that would be a bit harder to explain.

  7. I think it'd be harder to explain where I got the ray gun from than to explain what I was doing with it! lol!

I don't want to go through the trouble of obtaining a ray gun, so I promise I won't zap any appliances.

  8. Niko: I heard the cathode tube high-pitch noise too. I heard it so distinctly that I would enter a room where the TV had been switched off in the past 2 minutes and say: "You were watching TV, weren't you", because the high-pitch noise would slowly diminish but still be there for a little while.

My most hated noises are periodic noises when I am trying to sleep or relax. Washing machine: OK. Wristwatch tick-tack: terrible. Someone taking a shower: OK. Tap not well closed "ping ping ping": terrible.

About fridge noises, it depends. They're usually random, so for me they're OK. Except once that I was with my group of friends at a restaurant and there was a horrible high-pitched fridge that drove me and the professional musician friend insane, and that everyone else didn't hear. We had to ask them "OK, let's finish eating as soon as possible and leave".

(FWIW, as far as I know I am an NT. Weird, but neurotypical).
