Misophonia

misophonia (n): Dislike of sound - especially sounds associated with chomping, slurping, munching, snarfing, slucking, masticating, and other mealtime behaviors - to the point of "instantaneous blood-boiling rage."

When a Chomp or a Slurp Is a Trigger for Outrage

  1. OMCat! This was me having to sit at the same table as my little brother when we were growing up! He made all this disgusting noises when he ate, no one else seemed to ever notice but me, drove me insane. I wanted to kill him most of the time.

  2. Very much hate that sound I have to remove myself otherwise bodily harm may be done and/or I may vomit on them

  3. This is odd. I don't have misophonia. I am, however, very sensitive to sounds, especially to the way languages sound. I adore certain languages because of the sounds they contain and how they pattern while hating others. That being said, I am working towards becoming a Phonetician in order to work on the sounds of those languages I love. Does anybody have this sort of reaction?

  4. Oh, my, so common! So now all that rage we have is justifiable, yes? Vomiting, I dunno... I don't endorse that.

  5. That NY Times article...oh my God. It's me. I immediately forwarded it to my husband, because I think he kinda hates me because I won't let him breathe or eat around me. (I know. I wouldn't want to be married to me either.) Let's not even talk about gum.

  6. Totally agree. When my sister and I were still living with our parents, we had egg rolls for Sunday breakfast. One day, my sister started slurping her egg roll. I don't know why, but it hit my "enrage" button. I shouted at her "Stop slurping your egg roll!!" This got me into trouble. I'm still surprised that such a sound got me screaming mad.

  7. Hmmm, gum doesn't bother me so much, for some reason. Egg rolls - never thought about it - never had anyone slurp one in my presence. Bagels are notorious offenders, I've found.

  8. Slurping egg rolls? The mere thought irks me! And I love egg rolls!

I'll have to ask my kids to move to another room or just stop what they're doing. If they use a certain pen/pencil especially on a certain paper. Oi. And I love my b/f dearly, but sometimes he has habits that bug me too... loads of fun.

I'm going to show the article to my b/f. I bet it'll ring a bell when he reads it.

  9. This is definitely me. Also, I cannot stand the sound of a liquid being poured into a glass. It strikes me as being corny, though I have no idea why. Weird, huh?

  13. Oh, I have not had the pleasure of hearing a dog eat... maybe it deserves its own name, misocaninophonia?
